Council Tax Discount Claims Drop Following Hartlepool Council Crackdown
The number of households claiming council tax discounts in Hartlepool has fallen by over 300 after a targeted effort to reduce erroneous claims, according to recent updates from Hartlepool Borough Council. The crackdown focused on single-person discount claims, where eligible households receive a 25% council tax reduction if only one adult (aged 18 or older) resides in the property.
James Magog, director of finance, IT, and digital services for the council, shared that there’s “quite a way to go” in their efforts but remains hopeful the number of claimants will continue to decrease. The council initially aimed to reduce claims by 400 households during the 2024/25 period, potentially saving around £150,000. As of August, claimants dropped by over 300, following a public announcement of the initiative earlier in the year, which encouraged residents to verify their eligibility.
To further support the effort, the council introduced a “prosecution amnesty” in April, allowing individuals to come forward without penalty before a new sanction policy was implemented. Mr. Magog noted that while some cases involve intentional fraud, many are likely due to unintentional mistakes, emphasizing a commitment to addressing both kinds.
Single-person discounts may also apply in cases where two adults live in the household, but one is exempt from council tax, such as full-time students
